It's no secret that I love coffee, my love, I mean my morning routine consists and revolves entirely around it; the act of slowly and meticulously pouring boiling water out of my favorite goose-neck kettle and onto the freshly roasted coffee grounds (perks of having a husband who is a roaster!).
This, however, is not exactly always the case - I have learned the hard way that there are some days my body just says “no...please no more coffee”. This happens often in the winter when flu season abounds and I need something I know will warm my hands and soothe my soul.
Golden milk is the perfect drink for those cold blustery winter days. Rich, spicy, and warm. Its bright color matching it’s deep flavor is enough to bring the sunshine into your favorite cozy corner on the cloudiest of winter days.
1 cup Almond milk (or milk of choice)
1 tsp organic powdered turmeric or 1.5 tsp fresh grated turmeric
1 tbs fresh grated ginger or powdered ginger
1 cinnamon stick
2 cardamom pods or 1/3 tsp ground cardamom
1 star anise pod
a pinch of fresh ground black pepper
1/3 tsp vanilla (optional)
2 halved pitted dates (optional)
small pinch of Himalayan salt (optional)
Pour the milk into a saucepan, add turmeric, ginger, dates, cinnamon, vanilla, and other spices.
Heat milk until simmering and allow to simmer (stirring frequently)
Simmer for about 5-7 minutes until spices have been thoroughly steeped and mixed.
Remove from heat and allow to cool.
Strain liquid through a fine-mesh strainer and add a heaping spoonful (or two) of raw honey. You may want to add more to taste as this drink can be quite strong.
My favorite way to serve this is by frothing some of the milk to top it off and sprinkling it with a touch of cinnamon and cardamom
